Yellow Brick War - Danielle Paige
Yellow Brick War - Danielle Paige
Here is the Goodreads synopsis:
Once upon a time, there was a girl from Kansas named Dorothy.
You might know her as the Girl Who Rode the Cyclone. She ended up in Oz, where she became friends with the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion. But the temptation of magic was too much for her. She let it change her. Her friends became twisted versions of their former selves.
The magical land of Oz is now a dark and menacing place.
My name is Amy Gumm. Tornadoes must have a thing about girls from Kansas, because I got swept away on one too. I also landed in Oz, where Good is Wicked, Wicked is Good, and the Wicked Witches clued me in to my true calling:
Assassin.
The only way to stop Dorothy from destroying Oz—and Kansas—is to kill her. And I’m the only one who can do it.
But I failed. Others died for my mistakes. Because of me, the portal between the worlds has been opened and Kansas and Oz are both in danger. And if I don’t find a way to close it?
Dorothy will make sure I never get to go home again.

My Thoughts:
**Any book review will most likely contain spoilers**
**Any book review will most likely contain spoilers**
This book was Okay, an easy read for me. However, I think this series is getting to be out of hand. First, it was just kill Dorothy, and then we first had to defeat the Tin woodman, the Lion, and the Scarecrow but we also had Glinda to deal with and now we have this Nome King. I think the series could have ended with the defeat of Dorothy, and just not have the Nome King involved at all. Paige is not necessarily a bad writer it is just now this story is getting to be too much.
I did suspect that something was off about Glamora just based off her actions after the fight with Glinda. I also thought maybe Mombi was hiding something, but in regards to this book, I was wrong.
My Full Book Synopsis:
**spoilers**
Yellow Brick War picks up right where the Wicked Will Rise left off. Amy, the witches, and Dorothy had just been dumped in Kansas by the now dead Wizard. However, it does not take long for Dorothy to use her magic shoes to take her back to Oz. Before Dorothy can leave, Nox take his place in “The Order” amongst the other 3 witches, Glamora, Mombi and the not actually dead Gert. They try to stop Dorothy but their magic is not as strong in Kansas, and it also does not help that Amy’s magic does not work in Kansas.
After Dorothy escapes back to Oz, Amy is given the task of finding Dorothy’s original silver shoes. It is their only hope of getting back to Oz. Amy has a few problems ahead of her.
-She has been gone for a month.
-The shoes are supposedly at her high school somewhere.
-How does she explain where she’s been.
-She still has her old enemy Madison at the high school.
Amy finds her Mom, sober and living in an apartment and somehow forgot to think of a story explaining her absence. Her Mom just decides to believe whatever story Amy says.
However, people at her school are not so ready to believe what they have been told.
A big surprise to Amy, Madison is actually decent to her. Madison is now an outcast due to the fact she is the stereotypical small town teen mom. Her and Dustin have broken up but remain close as they both now have a son to take care of.
Amy convinces her “now friends,” Madison and Dustin, to help her in locating these hypothetical Dorothy shoes. They do not find the shoes but they do find an old diary of Dorothy’s.
Now we have another villain to deal with. The Vice principal, who is actually the Nome King has his own agenda and wants to use Amy. A fight breaks out, Amy finds the shoes and her, Nox, and the other witches are sent back to Oz.
Amy and Nox can no longer be together now because he is now bound in “The Order” to the other three witches, which means he cannot have a normal life anymore.
A short while later Glinda comes with her army, Pete and Ozma as her prisoners. A fight between her and Glamora ensues. Then Dorothy shows up with her own forces and a gigantic beast that used to be her small dog, Toto. Next, the Monkey Queen Lulu comes to assist the witches. Amy kills Toto, Glamora defeats Glinda, and a weak Dorothy escapes.
In the calm aftermath of the fight, Amy sees a vision of her Mom, her Mom’s boyfriend, Madison, and Dustin all in her apartment. The vice principal/Nome King is also there and warns Amy she has a lot to lose and that he is coming for her. He also warns her that the silver shoes won't protect her for long.
The next day they left Ozma in the care of Lulu and the rest of the monkeys and went to hunt down Dorothy. In the Emerald Palace Nox and Amy find Dorothy, and she is about to use “The Great Clock” which is the heart of Oz’s magic, in order to keep herself in power. Amy follows the great clock in the water thing Dorothy threw it into and she was transported to a place between Oz and Kansas where she meets Lurline, who is the great-great-great-grandmother of Ozma. She warns Amy that magic is not safe for people like her, people from Kansas (The Other Place). Magic has corrupted Dorothy and has driven her mad. Lurline also mentions that not all her companions really want Oz healed, but that she is watching over her, and that the Silver shoes were actually hers. Lurline Gives Amy an amulet and says she will know who to give it to when the time is right.
Amy has now been transported back to Oz like no time has passed. Amy had the chance t kill Dorothy, but she did not want to become a merciless killer like Dorothy had become. However, the magic of the great clock became too much for Dorothy and it destroyed her. The Emerald Palace begins to collapse in on itself. Amy tells the others that she did not kill Dorothy, but that Dorothy was defeated. Everyone is Skeptical that Dorothy is actually dead even though Amy says no one could have survived the collapse of the palace.
Amy figures out that the amulet is to be given to Ozma, which then instantaneously brings Ozma back to her original self. Glamora is slightly skeptical that Ozma is actually back and when first seeing the amulet she had a look of greed in her eyes. In the aftermath of everything that has happened so far, “The Order” wants to take the shoes off Amy, Mombi says they belong to Oz even though Lurline says they will help Amy in her endeavors.
There is a coronation and feast for the newly re-established Queen Ozma. During this time, Amy and Nox finally get a moment to themselves, but then overhear Mombi and Glamora talking about needing to make sure Amy stays under their control. Mainly Glamora does not trust Amy. Mombi sees Amy and Nox eavesdropping on them and end her conversation with Glamora who then walks off. Nox and Mombi both agree Glinda is in Glamora’s mind controlling her. Glamora/Glinda in return spies on them and decides she needs to act now. She reveals she is on the side of the Nome King. The Nome King comes to Oz with Madison to trade her for Amy’s shoes. A fight begins with Mombi distracting the Nome King while Nox, Amy, and Madison begin to escape.
The End
